Timeline: 6 months

The Stakeholder
The Robert Koch Institute, which is the German national public health institution, managed the DIVI Intensive Care Registry (ICR). This critical resource was used by over 1.300 acute care hospitals in Germany during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor ICU capacities and patient data in real time.
-
My Role
As the UX researcher and acting Product Owner for the ICR, I led UX research efforts, identified key pain points, and drove product improvements during a colleague’s maternity leave. I collaborated with cross-functional teams to redesign the website and enhance its usability, ensuring it met the needs of medical professionals.
-
The Challenge
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the ICR's usability and data accessibility were critical for timely decision-making by healthcare professionals. However, the interface had several usability issues that hindered efficient data input and retrieval. The challenge was redesigning the ICR to make it more intuitive and user-friendly, addressing the needs of over 1,300 hospitals.
-
The Approach
Conducted UX research, including interviews and usability testing with medical staff, to identify 25 pain points and usability issues within the ICR interface.
Collaborated with cross-functional teams, including product and healthcare experts, to implement user-centric design improvements.
Streamlined data transfer processes to enhance accessibility and efficiency.
Helped to pioneer open data initiatives by making the ICR data available on GitHub, expanding access for over 850 users in major medical institutions across Germany.
-
The Outcome
The redesigned ICR system led to significant improvements in usability and user satisfaction. Medical staff reported increased efficiency in patient monitoring and decision-making, thanks to the more intuitive interface.
The open data initiative promoted transparency and made it easier to share knowledge among healthcare professionals and institutions.
